WILD CORNEL TREE (CORNUS MAS)

My Odyssey with cornelian cherry wood, based on myths and legends.

ZIEGENHAINER

The Ziegenhainer walking stick was not only a secret weapon of the student connections for fencing. Challenges could only be offered with this symbol of the opposing party. For historical Ziegenhainer already sums have been offered which any wife of a stick lover would drive insane, if they should ever know the sum. Ziegenhain is a village near Jena and has become very popular as a place of manufacture of these knotsticks. Hence the naming.

GÖRE : Two originals Ziegenhainer in the Göre, a museum restaurant on the market square in Jena.

FIRST OF ALL : The very first Ziegenhainer, made by yourself.

KNOB : The inimitable texture becomes visible only when the wood etchings.

ALMANAC : The annual rings are about one millimeter close to each other. In bad, dry soils it can be three. Then the teeth of the best Japanese wood saws tear out.

TIP : Two millimeters of sheet steel rolled and welded.

BURNT : The lower stick was made around 1914 at stick factory Zitzmann in Eisenberg. The worker was Gustav Heidenreich. I acquired the stick over the 3rd consecutive generation of his great-grandchildren.

Over the burn stick ... the very first Kornel I what in the steam bent ... he was so terribly crooked that no one would have even taken him as firewood.

THREE SPECIAL ONES : In Zatoichi manner, each of these sticks reaches a measured impact energy of 900 English pounds without breaking. This is a very big pleasure and hobby from a internationally known man.

WORM EFFEKT : A Ziegenhainer made as a talking stick.

TURNED : This corkscrew shape is created by the forest honeysuckle, (Lonicera periclymenum).
